The Science of Reading: What to Know and Tools to Help

The Science of Reading: What to Know and Tools to Help

Reading is an essential skill that is fundamental to academic success and personal growth. It enables students to acquire knowledge, express themselves, and communicate effectively with others. However, mastering reading literacy is not an intuitive process. It requires dedication and the right tools and resources. Lucky for teachers, there's a science behind reading, and we here at CTP have leveraged that into helpful tools that make learning to read fun and effective.

A Book to Start Young Learners Reading: Phonics A to Z

Research suggests that explicit, systematic phonics instruction is key to successful reading. The more success students have using phonics to read words, the more capable and confident they feel about reading -- and who doesn't want a confident reader? Our new workbook for Pre-K to 1st Graders called Phonics A to Z is designed to help children become proficient readers by teaching them to build word recognition skills. This educational resource targets essential phonics skills that will engage young learners and guide them towards reading fluency.

Reinforce Reading Lessons with the I Can Do It! Phonics Workbook

Proficient reading requires two main components: decoding and comprehension. With the I Can Do It! Phonics workbooks for Kindergarten and First Grade levels, students are given ample opportunity to practice both decoding and comprehension skillsets. The activities in the I Can Do It! series provide repeated practice to aid mastery with essential skills and academic concepts. Use the Phonics workbooks to introduce, reinforce, or extend young learners' reading lessons.

The "Big 6" Behind the Science, and Tools to Help

Reading can further be broken down into six main components which, when mastered by students, can turn them into capable and confident readers. These six aspects of reading can be categorized into the following:

Oral Language: using words verbally to express knowledge, ideas, and feelings.

Phonemic Awareness: the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.

Check out the I Can Do It! Letters and Sounds Pre-K Workbook for fun activities to help students practice this skill!

Phonics: the understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds.

In addition to our workbooks for students, the Conquering Phonics Fantastic Tips fan was created by teachers for parents and teachers, and is a wealth of information, strategies, tips, and tricks in a handy "fan" format. Appropriate for grades PreK-2, this must-have resource breaks down phonics and early reading concepts to make the content easier to teach and understand.

Fluency: the ability to read with accuracy, speed, and expression.

Vocabulary: the words and their meanings that are used in spoken and written language.

Our I Can Do It! Kindergarten Reading workbook is perfect for reinforcing the aforementioned skills in addition to enhancing young learners' vocabularies.

Comprehension: the ability to understand what you have read.

Build students' comprehension and reinforce the reading skills they have learned with our Grade 1 I Can Do It! Reading Comprehension workbook.
