Calm has been defined as “a sense of internal composure that lets us function to the best of our abilities.” * Teachers everywhere desire this state of mind for both themselves and their students. One easy hack for helping to achieve a calmer classroom atmosphere is the incorporation of cool colors—bright, less saturated blues, greens, and purples—which research suggests have a calming effect on the body and mind, resulting in improved concentration and less stress. This same color palette is also used in hygge (hoo-guh), the popular design/lifestyle trend from Denmark that is gaining popularity in classrooms. Hygge’s emphasis on comfort and uncluttered coziness promotes a sense of contentment and togetherness.
