Summer is almost here and students are ready to take a break from school and all things having to do with learning and academics. While taking a break is a good thing to avoid burnout, it may cause students to experience summer slide. Summer slide (or summer learning loss) is a term used to describe the decline of a student's academic skills and difficulty when transitioning back to the classroom environment after summer vacation. The struggle many parents face is how to balance the break their kids need to come back to school refreshed versus potentially suffering the summer slide.
Some tips to avoid a summer learning loss is to read every single day. Reading is a great way for your child to continue learning all summer long. Reading can be anything from their favorite book, to an interesting article, or even something that as a parent you can read aloud to your kids. Even a few pages a day can keep the summer slide away.
