eBook FAQ

eBook Basics

What is an eBook?

eBook stands for electronic book. It is a digital copy of a book. Usually available in PDF format.

How is an eBook different than a hard copy of a book?

The content in an eBook is no different than it's hard copy version. eBooks are purchased online and available to you instantly -- no waiting for shipping! You can print out individual pages, or the full book as many times as needed.

Are eBooks compatible with Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs)?

Yes, all CTP eBooks are compatible with any brand of IWB (ex. SMART Board, Promethean). After you purchase an ebook, it will be available within the order record in your account.

Once you download this file and save it to your computer, you will be able to open it on your interactive whiteboard just like you would be able to open any other file. You can display the pages from the eBook and incorporate them into your lesson plans.

If you are unfamiliar with IWBs, they are an interactive learning tool designed to display your computer's desktop on a large touch screen at the front of the classroom. Then, by touching the screen, teachers and students can navigate a variety of digital files including eBook PDFs. Users can also "draw" on the board (ie: fill in the blanks on a projected page), and then print or e-mail what is on the board. All work completed on an IWB can then be saved for next year, freeing you from hours spent creating and cleaning overheads. They can also be saved and posted to class websites or content management systems (ex. School Loop, Schoolwires Centricity).

Do I need special software to view and use Open eBooks?

Yes - you need the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free here: www.get.adobe.com/reader/

Now I have Adobe Acrobat Reader and an Open eBook - what next?

Using Acrobat Reader, open the eBook file and just copy and paste the sections of the Open eBook you’d like into a word processor, like Microsoft Word, and then add your own questions, pictures, or examples for truly custom lessons. You can also use text from Open eBooks to build lessons for your Interactive Whiteboard, or take advantage of programs that can translate the content of PDFs into other languages.

Are there any advantages to using a paid version of Adobe Acrobat?

If you are using a paid version of Adobe Acrobat, you can also rotate and extract pages and copy certain images or objects from an Open eBook file.

Can I copy all of the content from an Open eBook, including images and formatting?

Due to the nature of PDF files, not all images can be copied; text formatting will also be lost. Users can customize the text formatting by copying and pasting the text into a word processor (e.g. Microsoft Word), and then adding the desired formatting.

Is every eBook available in both regular and Open versions?

No. Some titles may not be available as Open eBooks, specifically if they contain mostly graphics, which cannot be copied, or have other formatting that interferes with selecting text.

Do Open eBooks have copyrights?

Yes!! Open eBooks are subject to the same copyright laws as regular eBooks or print books: Reproduction of activities in any manner for use in the classroom and not for commercial sale is permissible. Reproduction of these materials (from the hard copy, eBook, or Open eBook) in whole or in part for an entire school or for a school system is strictly prohibited.”

My Open eBook won't let me edit text and I'm not seeing the add comment tool. How can I enable this feature?

You must save the file to your computer and open it using Adobe Reader. Some web browsers will display eBook PDFs in a new tab that does not include the text edit feature. Click on the pdf save button download button on the top right of your screen to save the file to your computer. Then open it with Adobe Reader

  • Immediately after checkout, you will see your ebook download links on the confirmation page.
  • You will also be able to access your purchases within the order details page in My Account. Simply find the order that contains the ebook file, and click on the order number to open the details page. You will find a blue download button next to the ebook title.

How long can I access eBook download links?

Ebook links do not expire over time, however, you are limited to 5 downloads per ebook in a single purchase.

You can keep the file you downloaded forever.

No, that would be a violation of the book’s copyright. Your rights to an eBook are the same as your rights to the hard-copy version. If you wouldn’t do it with a hard-copy book, you shouldn’t do it with an eBook. “Reproduction of activities [from this book, eBook, or Open eBook] in any manner for use in the classroom and not for commercial sale is permissible. Reproduction of these materials for an entire school or for a school system is strictly prohibited.”

Can I put the eBook file on a shared server?

No. Your rights to an eBook are the same as your rights to the hard-copy version. “Reproduction of activities in any manner for use in the classroom and not for commercial sale is permissible. Reproduction of these materials (from the hard copy, eBook, or Open eBook) in whole or in part for an entire school or for a school system is strictly prohibited.”

I’ve tried to download the eBook and it keeps telling me the file is corrupted. What should I do?

The most common solution for this problem is to download a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. The newest version is available for free download here: get.adobe.com/reader
