SUPERHERO ZERO Recognizing Numbers · Counting · Sorting · Patterning · Estimating · Comparing Quantities The Secret Visitor On the 10 day of school, label a small paper bag 10 and ten (you may wish to include ten tally marks), and then fill the bag with ten items such as stickers, buttons, or candies. Hide the bag in your classroom before students arrive in the morning. Tell students about Superhero Zero—a special friend who loves to celebrate numbers ending in 0. Inform students that Superhero Zero has secretly visited the classroom and has left a gift bag somewhere in the room. Invite students to find the hidden bag and guess what's inside. Share the contents of the bag and have students use the items to practice counting, sorting, patterning, and estimating. Have Superhero Zero "visit" the classroom every ten days up to the 100th day of school. Be sure to label each new bag accordingly (20 and twenty items, 30 and thirty items, and so on) and enclose the correct number of items. Puppets Have students use copies of the Superhero Zero reproducible to make stick puppets. Invite students to move their puppets as they practice counting by tens. For extra fun, invite students to dictate or write stories about Superhero Zero and act out the stories with their puppets.
