Hands-On Word Study Activities
Word sorting requires children to group words into different categories, drawing their attention to word patterns that help in understanding how words work. This resource includes over 440 word cards as well as full-color sorting mats and labels. Sorting ideas and suggestions are included for whole-class, small-group, and individual work.
Word Sorting includes 16 categories of word sorts, pre-made word cards, pre-made sorting mats to guide children through the sorting process, as well as a variety of activity ideas. Through word sorting, children will learn how to decode by analogy (comparing similarities and differences), differentiate word and spelling patterns, and recognize the relationship between letters (graphemes) of written language and individual sounds (phonemes) of spoken language. With these phonics skills, children will be able to decode new words and identify familiar words quickly and accurately, which will lead to proficient reading.
